Obviously no one at microsoft ever considered that there would be 30 brand new dell workstations in a public computer lab, each with a fully functional speaker in the tower, playing a god damn jingle every time someone logs in or out. I get very annoyed by background noises, but more than that, I can't stand to see such blatant stupidity. Is this part of the amazing eXPerience is it designed to calm our nerves a bit before we face the horror that is modern computer use? Or is it just meant to make windows appear modern and sleek? If so, would it not have been enough to have it play on the first boot? Do we really need it every single time thereafter? I can personally do without a happy musical chime to tell me that the operating system has started. The absolute worst, however, is the windows startup/shutdown sound. The utter uselessness of these sounds demonstrates a disregard for sensible user interface design. Is it in any way useful to have the machine make an audiable DING whenever a dialog comes up? After all, it pops up on the screen - that's more than enough to let a user know that there's a question that requires answering. Who at Microsoft thought it would be a good idea for computers to make asinine little noises every time they do some random thing? Can we find this person, tie them down, and kick them in the groin repeatedly?
